The Snow Leopard Foundation (SLF), in collaboration with Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU) and the Ministry of Climate Change & Environmental Coordination (MoCC&EC), organized an impactful and insightful event to mark the International Day for Biological Diversity 2025 at FJWU’s New Auditorium in Rawalpindi.
The event was graced by prominent environmental advocates and dignitaries. Sardar Jamal Leghari, Wildlife Ambassador and GSLEP Emissary, served as the chief guest, while Prof. Dr. Bushra Mirza, Vice Chancellor of FJWU; Mr. Naeem Ashraf Raja, Director of the Biodiversity Programme at MoCC&EC; and Mr. Melis Moldaliev, Charge d’Affaires at the Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic, were the guests of honor.
In his keynote address, Sardar Jamal Leghari emphasized the fundamental role of biodiversity in sustaining life on Earth. “From towering mountains to deep valleys, every species maintains a crucial ecological balance. The efforts of organizations like SLF to protect the snow leopard and its habitat are vital for preserving this biodiversity,” he stated.
Prof. Dr. Bushra Mirza, in her remarks, highlighted the transformative role of academic institutions. “Universities are not only centers of knowledge but also catalysts for positive change. Engaging youth in research and awareness on biodiversity is a crucial step toward a sustainable future,” she noted.
Mr. Naeem Ashraf Raja shared updates on national biodiversity initiatives and stressed the importance of integrating policy, science, and community action. “Events like these serve as bridges that connect scientific research, policymaking, and youth-driven innovation,” he remarked.
The event featured 13 student groups from FJWU’s Environmental Sciences Department who showcased their research projects, awareness videos, and e-poster presentations addressing various challenges and solutions related to biodiversity. The creative and scientific merit of the students’ work was widely appreciated by all guests, with certificates awarded to the top three performing groups.
Dr. Shoaib Hameed, Senior Program Manager at SLF, delivered a detailed presentation on the Foundation’s work. He highlighted SLF’s science-based conservation model that actively engages communities and government partners in protecting endangered wildlife across Pakistan’s mountain ecosystems, particularly in Gilgit-Baltistan, Chitral, and Kashmir.
The event concluded with closing remarks by Mr. Tayyab Shehzad from SLF, who thanked the guests and participants, reiterating the Foundation’s continued commitment to biodiversity conservation, youth engagement, and environmental education.
